 What is Bollywood?

-Bollywood is India's Hollywood and is the largest film producer in the world.

How has it changed over time?

-While Bollywood was mostly made up of conservative love stories, it has changed and has become more suggestive throughout the years. The changes made are showed through these videos, the first from a classic Indian tale, "Devdas", and the other from an about a year old production, "Dhoom 2".  The reason we chose bollywood as oour subject was because we thought it wouldnt be to hard seeing as how one of us (salma) has seen a lot of good bollywood movies.

A classic hindu dance in Devdas

A dance in dhoom 2 which could be mistaked for an american dance film

The movie Devdas which is a simple Hindu guided film.                                        Image:DHOOM2.jpg      Dhoom 2 which is a lot more dramatic in the sense that all the charecters  including the females show more skin.

In "Devdas" classical Indian dancing is shown and the costumes are traditional Indian saris. Even the singing is kept to the basic, purely in Hindi with no inferences of any other languages or making any other references to other cultures. In "Dhoom" the influence of America seems to take over and one would not know that this was an Indian production. The wardrobe is not kept classically and the dancing does not go back to traditional Indian styles.

Mock Dialogue:

Devdas: The way you've portrayed our culture is not what it actually is!

Dhoom 2: You fail to see that this is what India is becoming right before our eyes.

Devdas: That's the unfortunate part of all of this. If India, the most culturally rich country in the world, is flushed away, we will become like the cultureless America, which is not what we want for our grand country.

Dhoom 2: This is just keeping up with times.

Devdas: Keeping India classic.

Dhoom 2: Look at our competition in the west they are the ones scoring big in the movie industry.

Devdas: Is that all that people care about these days is money.

Dhoom 2: No we care about the future of India's culture even if it means altering it to fit with western culture.
