The Changing Role of Women in India

Women in India are starting to change their view points and their outlooks on life like the Western society of women. They are starting to demand equality in human. But, it has become clear that the modern culture of women will have to familiarize and become accustomed to the traditional Indian culture of women. Because of the caste system, it maybe hard, but as our world is changing, women of India are developing their rights of health care, education and job opportunities. Even though it is very little, women are starting to gain more and more equality between men and women in Indian society. Because of the caste system and traditional segregation of sexism, Indian women took very slow time to develop in gaining their equality. However, they have done so much of what people thought of as impossible, they will get through and overthrow the Indian male advantaged society.

Traditional Indian Women

Many traditional things in India were practiced in the past. These things included, Sati, Jauhar, child marriages, Purdah and Devadasis.

Sati

Sati is an old, largely defunct custom, in which the widow was burned alive on her husband's funeral pyre. The practice of the voluntary burning of all the wives and daughters of defeated warriors. This was to done to prevent rape and molestation from the enemy. Some say that the act was voluntary by the widow, but it is believed that it was actually forced upon the widow . It was abolished by the British in 1829.

Child marriages
Earlier, child marriages were highly prevalent in India. Although child marriage was outlawed in 1860, it is still a common practice in some underdeveloped areas of the country.
Purdah
Purdah is the practice of requiring women to cover their bodies so as to cover their skin and conceal their form.

Devadasis

Devadasi is a religious practice in some parts of southern India, in which women are "married" to a deity or temple, but it later became way for sexual exploitation.

Gargi Chakravarty said in 1990 that “Girls are looked upon by their parents as burdens”. Traditional Indian Women were treated very different from men. Their place was only at the house, and they were greatly looked down upon by their own familis. One could and would that in India, "A woman's place was in the kitchen". In the old India, women were much more modest and strict about their clothing, they followed the traditions very strictly . Also, women in the old days were found always at home, with jobs such as sowing, cooking, caring for the children and such . Women did not attend school, work or have equality. Men dominated India. Traditional India was basically a chauvinist country. Everything was men run. They went to work, they went to school and it was believed that Men sometimes were just placed in a higher caste because well, they were men and superior to women. Women did not strive for rights or equality. They accepeted there place in society as what they were and how they were treated. Instead of the way modern women are changing to fashion and glamour, Traditional women just dressed tradionally.
