India's traditional clothing has several similarities and differences when compared to the more modern western clothing. Some key differences in the cultures clothing are the material and how much of the body is covers. The majority of the differences are seen in the way the women in both cultures dress. Walking down a street in India, one would see the difference in clothing between the young and the old. The older women will usually be wearing the traditional sari and the younger women will most commonly be wearing the more modern western clothing. The traditional sari is a dress made of a light fabric that has a large piece of cloth wrapped around the body; the sari covers most of the body. The more modern western dress is the typical jeans and a T-shirt or tank top. Though there is a large contrast between the new and the old there is a middle point. The salwar kameez is a more modern form of a sari. The salwar kameez is made of the traditional fabric and has the same style, but instead of a wrapped dress, it is pants and a shirt. Ahmani and I choose this topic because the great contrast between the traditional Indian clothing and the clothing worn in India today is fascinating. It is amazing that so much has changed but in Indian clothing you get a glimpse at the past, while seeing the present.
Dialogue:Traditional vs modern uh oh! Who will win...?
Setting: India; in side an Indian home, a mother and daughter are getting dressed for the traditional Indian harvest festival. The mother wants her daughter to ware the traditional Indian clothes however the daughter wants to ware the more modern westernized clothes. Who will win this battle? The world may never know! (: unless you read the following! :)
Mother- Aashay, are you dressed for the harvest festival, it’s almost time.
Aashay- I don’t know what I want to ware. Should I ware this cute Abercrombie skirt? Oh! What about these holster pants! This tank top with those jeans would look perfect with my new Louie Vuitton purse!
Mother- we are going to a traditional ceremony. Put on some of your old clothes. How about your sari? Ooh, your kurta pajama looks nice.
Aashay -Uggh mom, that’s the old style. The store down the street made them look so much cooler. Here I will show you, I took a picture of it with my cell phone.
Aashay reaches in her pocket and pulls out her cell phone.
Aashay- Look, the sleeves are off and it doesn’t cover up as much. It looks a lot better than the old one, don’t you think? It’s more modern.
Mother- Oh yeah you’re right, I do like it better. Let’s hurry up and get them before they run out. You know how these Indian teenage girls are always getting the new clothes before any of us, so let’s go!
