From Strings to Synth

We picked this topic because we both enjoy music. Researching further into what actually makes up both traditional and modern Indian music sounded like a lot of fun. Overall, there are a few major differences between modern and classical. First being the instrument choice, in modern you would be lucky to hear any instruments that sound like anything besides a keyboard creating fake atmospheric sounds. As with traditional you might hear a sitar, a tall stringed instrument almost like a guitar or a tabla, two drums, one of wood and the other metal that have become very popular. Also, modern music, as in American culture, is usually very quickly paced. Traditional is typically slower and more drawn out, like American culture as well. Relating to American music as well, there is such music as Indipop which strangely resembles American pop music. The conflict we are dealing with however is the problem of classical music being left behind by the present generation. Nowadays, most teenagers prefer modern over traditional and are forgetting their roots. This can only be solved by both this generation and earlier generations listening to both kinds of music to fully understand what the other is saying. We hope that this webpage will help the

young and old truly know each other and appreciate the entire culture. Enjoy.

Modern Indian Music

Modern Indian music usually is a blend of western and Eastern ideas.

As you can see, several "Western" instruments, such as the piano and

guitar, are used side by side with traditional instruments. More and more

these days, however, Modern indian music mimics western pop rather

than its classical roots.

Classical Indian Music

Classical Indian music is a slow paced representation of the Indian culture.

Traditional Indian music employs many different kinds of instruments

made of many different kinds of mediums. Shown above are the sitar and

the tabla, both very common instruments still found in music today.

Dialog

Mother: What is that noise I hear? It is causing such a ruckus!

Daughter: That, mom, is music...my music

Mother: Turn it down! It's so loud and makes absolutely no sense.

Daughter: No. You should learn to appreciate the new age and its music; What you listen to is ancient and outdated.

Mother: What I listen to, young lady, is what we are. It is the musical representation through songs of my culture - OUR culture. Learn to appreciate it.

Daughter: But it's so slow and makes no sense...you should listen to our modern music. It fuses both old and new together, blending instruments of the west, like the piano, with our instruments- For instance, the sitar. It is the Harmony of the East and the West together.

Mother: But still, it is too different. They've changed our music too much.

Daughter: But you should still learn to appreciate the music I listen to, since part of it is still our own.

Mother: I suppose then both the ancient and the modern can exist together.
