The Changing Thali

mmm....food.

The Situation

India has long been famous for its exotic and decadent food; spicy curries, chutneys, gravies, and the ever-popular lassis (or milkshakes) and snacks such as samosas and pakodas. But, as any first-generation Indian will tell you, the quality and appreciation for traditional Indian food in our modern world is rapidly declining. Now, grocery stores offer pre-prepared microwaveable Indian dishes for quick eats, and one can find low-cal options for entrees and snacks as well. However, this modernization of an age-old traditional is not all bad. Some argue that, because the Indian diet is so predominantly vegetarian, this is contributing to the vegetarianization of the nation, and consequently, overall healthier American diets. So here is the question: Do we go with the flow and embrace the transformation of Indian food, or fight to retain the ancient tradition that is so important to Indians?

Old vs. New

Mom: Hello, dear. Do you want some chappatis?

Daughter: No one eats chappatis anymore mom. Everyone eats pancakes.

Mom: Oh, well, then how about some lassi?

Daughter: It is called a milkshake.

Mom: Don't you appreciate the Indian tradition?

Daughter: Why should I?

Mom: It's your culture! Your children will not have these delicious foods unless you appreciate your culture. Don't you enjoy these foods?

Daughter: Well, yes, kind of. But it's not what everyone else eats.

Mom: Everyone else does not have Indian parents who cook Indian meals for them.

Daughter: I guess you're right. Thanks, mom. I'll have some chappatis and lassi please! :)
